Psychodiagnostic assessment

Psychodiagnostic assessments are conducted from the age of 14 and can be done in Dutch, English or French. At NEM-O, we have years of experience in all sorts of assessments regarding ADHD, ASS, personality disorders, psychosis etc.
Intelligence assessments (including giftedness) are conducted from the age of 6 and can be conducted in Dutch, English or French.
When you feel stuck in your therapeutic process, when you feel different from others, when you seem lost in certain patterns… psychodiagnostic assessments can be very helpful.

Through psychodiagnostic assessments, we try to gain insight into who you are as a person, how you relate to others, your psychological complaints and vulnerabilities, and certainly also your strengths. The goal of such assessment is always to provide you with tools that you and, if applicable, your therapist, psychiatrist or psychologist can work with.

In some cases, a very specific question is asked (e.g., ‘Is there an autism spectrum disorder?’), and we try to answer this question as clearly as possible.

Psychodiagnostic assessments are conducted through interviews, questionnaires, and/or tasks. If we deem it necessary and you give permission, we are also happy to speak with a loved one. If you wish, we will also consult with any professional caregiver that’s already involved. At the end of the assessment, once we have pieced together the psychodiagnostic puzzle, we will report back to you in a feedback session and, if desired, to the professionals involved and your family. Finally, you will also receive a summary of the most important conclusions from the assessment.

Assessments can partially be done online, however, things like neuropsychological tasks, IQ testing and projective tests need to be done in person.

Why should I choose NEM-O?

Each one of us has been specializing for years in psychodiagnostic assessment. There is a lot of overlap between several diagnoses, like ADHD, ASD, PTSD, personality disorders, highly giftedness etc.

If you go to a practice that is only specialized in a certain topic, without taking specific things into account, like your IQ, or personality functioning, the possibility of getting the diagnosis wrong is unfortunately pretty high. For example, this happens a lot with ASD, since there is overlap with a myriad of other diagnoses, like PTSD, borderline personality disorder, highly giftedness, obsessive-compulsive personality disorder etc. Or with ADHD, where there is also a lot of overlap with giftedness, ASD, BPD, PTSD etc. There is no way to cut corners in an assessment: you cannot do a proper assessment without looking at the full picture of who is in front of you.

Do I need a psychiatrist for a diagnosis?

As clinical psychologists, we are authorized to make a diagnosis independently. The law of July 10, 2016, states that clinical psychologists may use the following definition of clinical psychology: ‘The practice of clinical psychology is defined as the customary performance of actions aimed, or proposed to aim, in a person and within a scientifically substantiated clinical psychological framework, at the prevention, assessment, detection, or making of a psychodiagnosis of real or imagined psychological or psychosomatic suffering, and at treating or supporting that person.’ This means, as we are autonomous healthcare professionals, we can independently determine how we form the process of assessment and what conclusions or diagnoses are made.

In conclusion an examination by a psychiatrist is not necessarily required for an official diagnosis. If you would like to apply for accommodations in higher education, a report from a psychologist will be more than sufficient.
However, if you would like to apply officially for a disability status (VAPH), a psychiatrist will need to be involved, because they always require a doctor to confirm the diagnosis. In this case, we will refer you (back) to a psychiatrist in your own region.
